Ligaya - Eraserheads

Here is another Eheads song with translation.

This was the song I used to sing like:
"Tatlong Oras na ang nagpapacute sa yo
Di mo man lang napapansin ang bagong Penshoppe(TM) ko" (It's an apparel brand here in Phils)

or my cousin would say to me when I'm ma at her:
"Tatlong Oras na ang nagpapacute sa yo
Di mo man lang napapansin ang bagong noo ko" (forehead)

Those were the days and this is my story. Below is the translation.
=========================
Lyrics of the song
LIGAYA (Happy/Happiness)
by Eraserheads

Ilang awit pa ba ang aawitin, o giliw ko? (How many songs will I still hav to sing my dear?)
Ilang ulit pa ba ang uulitin, o giliw ko? (How many repeats do I have to repeat, O my dear?)
Tatlong oras na akong nagpapacute sa iyo (I've been staying cute to you for three hours)
Di mo man lang napapansin ang bagong t-shirt ko (You don't even notice my new t-shirt)

Ilang isaw* pa ba ang kakain, o giliw ko? (How many more isaw* do I have to eat, my dear?)
Ilang tanzan** pa ba ang iipunin, o giliw ko? (How many crowns will I collect, o my dear?)
Gagawin ko ang lahat pati ang thesis mo (I will do everything including your thesis)
Wag mo lang ipagkait ang hinahanap ko (Just don't deny from me what I'm looking for)

Chorus:
Sagutin mo lang ako, aking sinta'y walang humpay na ligaya (Just answer me love and there will be unending happiness)
At asahang iibigin ka, sa tanghali, sa gabi at umaga (And expect to be loved at noontime, night and morning)
Wag ka sanang magtanong at magduda (I hope you won't ask and doubt)
Dahil ang puso ko'y walang pangamba (Because my heart has no fear)
Lahat tayo'y mabubuhay na tahimik at buong ligaya (We will all leave peacefully and with entire happiness)

Ilang ahit pa ba ang aahitin, o giliw ko? (How many shaves do I have to shave, O my dear?)
Ilang hirit pa ba ang hihiritin, o giliw ko? (How many hits do I have to hit, o my dear)
Di naman ako manyakis tulad nang iba (I am not maniac like th others)
Pinapangako ko sa iyo na igagalang ka (I swear to you that I will honor you)
(Chorus)

At asahang iibigin ka, sa tanghali, sa gabi at umaga (And expect to be loved at noontime, night and morning)
Wag ka sanang magtanong at magduda (I hope you won't ask and doubt)
Dahil ang puso ko'y walang pangamba (Because my heart has no fear)
Lahat tayo'y mabubuhay na tahimik at buong ligaya (We will all leave peacefully and with entire happiness)
*isaw is a street food, picture appearing above. I'd rather not say what is it really, but it is an exotic food.
**tanzan is a local term referring to the crown or cap of a bottle of beer or softdrinks; it is made from tin. (I believe it is a Spanish word adapted by Filipinos)

I hope you liked it guys!

Sembreak - Eraserheads

Sembreak in the Philippines runs in the month of October. That is the time when college students have a break from a semester of school time. We normally start the school year in June til about first week of October then after 2 or 3 weeks of a semestral break, school year resumes.

This is the meaning of the song's title. There are schools observing tri-mester curriculum so they will have 2 sembreaks plus another summer break which runs in the month of March or April.

Here goes my English translation for the song:

=======================
Sembreak by Eraserheads

Dear Kim kamustang bakasyon mo (Dear Kim, how is your vacation?)
Ako heto pa rin nababato*
(Me, still here bored)
Bad trip talagan 'tong Meralco
(Bad trip with MERALCO**)
Bakit brownout pa rin dito
(Still brownout here)

Walang silbi sa bahay
(Useless in the house)
Kundi bumabad sa telepono
(SPend time on the telephone)
O kaya'y kasama ang buong barkada
(Or be with beers)
Nakatambay sa may kanto
(Stand by/doing nothing in the corner)

Naalala kita pag umuulan (SEMBREAK) (I remember you when it's raining - Sembreak)
Naalala kita pag giniginaw (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you when I feel cold)
Naalala kita pagkakain na (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you during meal time)
Naalala kita ilang bukas pa ba
(I remember you, how many tomorrows)
Bago tayo ay magkita
(Before we see each other)
Ako'y naiinip na bawat oras binibilang
(Im becoming impatient, counting every hour)
Sabik na masilayan ka-ha-hah
(Excited to see you)

Sira pa rin ang bisikleta
(My bike is out of order)
May gas wala namang kotse
(I have fuel but no car)
Naghihintay ng ulan
(Wait for the rain)
Basketball sa banyo
(Basketball in the toilet)
Sana ay may pasok na para at least
(I hope classes are here)
Meron akong baon
(At least I'll have my allowance)
Cutting classes dating raket
(Cutting classes, old racket/gimmick)
Rock and roll buong taon
(Rock and Roll the whole year)

Naalala kita pag umuulan (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you when it's raining - Sembreak)
Naalala kita pag giniginaw (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you when I feel cold)
Naalala kita pagkakain na (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you during meal time)
Naalala kita ilang bukas pa ba
(I remember you, how many tomorrows)
Bago tayo ay magkita
(Before we see each other)
Ako'y naiinip na bawat oras binibilang
(Im becoming impatient, counting every hour)
Sabik na masilayan ka-ha-hah
(Excited to see you)

Walang kayakap kundi gitara (No one to hug but my guitar)
Nangangati sa kaiisip sa'yo
(Itchy thinking of you)
Hanggang sa mabutas 'tong maong ko
(Til my jeans get torn)
Tsaka bibili uli ng bago
(Then I'll buy a new one)
Hanggang dito na lang ang liham ko
(My letter is til here)
Salamat sa atensyon mo
(Thanks for your attention)
Tsaka na lang pala yung utang ko
(Ill pay you my debt)
Pag nagkita na lang uli tayo oh wohh
(When we see each other again)

Naalala kita pag umuulan (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you when it's raining - Sembreak)
Naalala kita pag giniginaw (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you when I feel cold)
Naalala kita pagkakain na (SEMBREAK)
(I remember you during meal time)
Naalala kita ilang bukas pa ba
(I remember you, how many tomorrows)
Bago tayo ay magkita
(Before we see each other)
Ako'y naiinip na bawat oras binibilang
(Im becoming impatient, counting every hour)
Sabik na masilayan ka-ha-hah
(Excited to see you)

Harana - Eraserheads

I thought the title of this song is "Lumbay" (meaning, lonely). He was around 3 years old then and his papa would ask him to sing "lumbay" and that little boy instantly knew what to sing.

Yup! It was an Eraserheads song. My first born niece grew up with an Eheads song and this was the first one he learned. His dad plays guitar a lot and he probably have heard his dad sing this song a dozen times and so at a very tender age, he was able to learn a few lyrics of the song. Together, they sing it to his mom, as a serenade -to lighten things up.

This is a fast song. A song typically shared to someone who is indeed in trouble or feeling blue. It is a boy singing/serenading a loved one.

Wag nang malumbay (Don't be lonely)
Ang pag-ibig ko ay tunay (My love for you is true)
Sabihin man ng ‘yung nanay na (Your mother may tell you that)
Wala akong silbi sa buhay…tunay (I am worthless in life... true!)

Kung ako ang papipiliin (If I were to choose)
Ay nag amsterdam na ako (I would have been in Amsterdam)
Wag mo lang akong pipilitin (Don't just force me)
Na wag gumamit ng gaheto* (not to use a gadget*)

Buksan mo ang yong bintana (Open your window)
Dungawin ang humahanga (Look down to your admirer)
Bitbit ko ang gitara (I brought my guitar)
At handa ng mang-harana (Ready to serenade you)

Na..na..na.naaaaa..

Wag nang malumbay (Don't be lonely)
Ang pag-ibig ko ay tunay (My love for you is true)
Sabihin man nang yung kapit-bahay (Even if your neighbor would say)
Na di ako nag susuklay (that I don't comb my hair)
Oh..tunay (Oh True!)

Kung ako ang papipiliin (If I were to choose)
Ay nag congressman na ako (I would have been a Congressman)
Wag mo lang akong pipilitin na (Don't just force me to)
Isoli ang bayad nyo (Return your payments)

Tumutunog ang kampana (The bell is ringing)
Hali ka na sa dambana (Come to the altar)
Bitbit ko ang guitara (I brought my guitar with me)
At handa ng mang harana (Ready to serenade you)

Na..na..na..naaaaaaaa

*I cannot find the exact translation of the word gaheto so I just guessed it meant "gadget" since there is no direct translation of that word in Filipino language.

Hey Jay - Eraserheads

In 2009, I was able to post at least eight (8) Eraserheads songs here. Seven of them were translated in English, the other one was Poorman's Grave. This year, I will make it a point to feature one OPM artist or group per month. I will try to do it on a regular basis so that their songs will be translated as well. Let this be my simplest way of giving tribute to our artist. The best way to start this little contribution to the industry is to feature the band that was practically my life's theme. If movies have theme songs, this is my theme song simply because, of all the music and songs I grew up with, Eheads had been in my system: when I sleep, when I wake up, when I drive the car, while I am reading, etc. There is always Eraserheads in my head!

So much about me. This is the song about Hey Jay. I really don't know who is Jay in this song but all I can say each time I hear this song, it refers to a gay person. Part of the lyrics said "hey Jay, be happy and be gay" so I thought they refer to a person belonging to the 3rd sex. (Please pardon my wording. I know third sex is not an acceptable term, neither is it politically correct but that is largely known as a reference to Homosexuals. Oh my, homosexuals is not even a correct term because it connotes sickness, a psychological one.) All right, so I will just settle on the word gay, referring to both male and female gays. I hope that is fine with you my dear readers. I know there are still questions on the word gay (some would say this only refers to the male gays). Hah! I think I will not be able to go straight to my blog about this song because of those confusing terminologies. I guess, I'll just have to translate the song and try to see or analyze, in each phrase that I will translate, if indeed the song is referring to gay people. Try to ask yourself if indeed, the lyrics talk about the experiences of someone who is gay. If anyone of you might ask, or have asked what is the meaning behind the song Hey Jay by Eraserheads, this is what I have to offer:
=========================
Hey Jay by Eraserheads
Hey jay nabugbog ka na naman kahapon (Hey Jay, I heard you were into fight yesterday)
Hey jay ba’t kasi pumunta ka pa sa lugar na ‘yon? (Hey Jay, why did you have to go to that place?)
Alam mo namang galit sila sa tulad mo (You know that they hate people like you)
Alam mo namang di ka nila maiintindihan (You know that they do not understand you)

Hey just look to the left and just look to the right ()
Makikita mo naman na hindi pantay-pantay (You will see that it's not fair)
Now he-he-he-hey jay
Everything’s gonna be okay
Everything’s gonna be okay

Hey jay nagaway na naman kayo ng tatay mo (Hey Jay, you had a fight with your dad again)
Hey jay wala raw siyang anak na katulad mo (He said he does not have a child like your)
Alam niya namang wala kang kasalanan (He knows it is not your fault) Alam niya na ipinanganak ka ng ganyan (He knows you were born that way)

Jay you can get it all up Jay you can get it all down
Ipagdasal na lang natin na balang araw ay (Let's just pray that someday...)
He-he-he jay(2x)
He-he-he jay Everything’s gonna be okay
Everything must be okay

Bakit ba sila ganyan (Why are they like that)
Puno ng galit ang isipan (Their minds are filled with anger)
Ba’t ba tayo ganito (Why are we like this)
Walang galang sa kapwata-o ta-o ta-o (No respect with fellow/people) Hey jay sa’n ka na ngayon pupunta (Hey Jay, where are you going now?)
Hey jay kailangan ay magtiis ka (Hey Jay, You need to sacrifice/bear the burden/have patience)
Alam mo namang may iba ka pang magagawa (You know that there are other things you can do)
Alam mo namang ang mahalaga ay nabubuhay ka (You know that what's important is you're alive)
Jay what you are and wherever you go
Isip-isipin mo na lang na may nagmamahal sa ‘yo (Just always think that there's someone who loves you)
Now he-he-he-he jaybe happy and be gay
He-he-he-he jay
we still love you anyway
We still love you anyway(2x)
Sha nah nah nah nah(4x)

Maling Akala - Eraserheads

This is one song that greatly influenced my admiration to my best ever, favorite Eraserheads Band. They just had simple words but a person who is able to combine words and mix it with a wonderful tune possesses a good talent. You can quote me on that. They are like the re-cyclers. You know those "green movement" thing saying reduce, re-use, recycle where we make something out of garbage. For me, Eraserheads is like that. I am saying their song came from, not actually from garbage but from scratch, yet they manage to blend it with art.

It's one thing to have the drive to recycle, when it comes to environment, but it's another to recycle with an art in it. It is just so admirable for me. I love art too, like music is an art right? But the only art I can create is an abstract one, which only me who can appreciate and understand. Haha. I mean, what is the use of an art that cannot convey a message, even a tiny bit of message. So I let the talent die. Was it even a talent? LOL

"Maling akala" or I translated it as wrong presumption, is a common trait. I grew up with it and the saying "marami ang namamatay sa maling akala" is an aged by-word. It has become a by-word, common word, devoid of meaning but when the band sang it, it came back to life. Then again, the phrase "maling akala" just became a song because we have already learned. Somehow, people have learned that before judging a thing or giving reactions or before anything, we should first verify the accounts before we believe them. Most of the people I know, do. Some still lingers on "I thought he said this, but I was wrong" or something like that. That is a wrong presumption, and many die because of it.

Finally, long after Eraserheads, disbanded, a group called Brownman Revival made a hit when they produced their own version of this song. Definitely, it made my heart leap for a moment when I heard it on FM radio, and although I've realized and analyzed that it was not the original band that was singing, I still enjoyed it. Anything Eraserheads to my ear is bliss!

There you are. Please leave your comments.

Translation of the song
Maling Akala (wrong presumption)
by Eraserheads

May mga kumakalat na balita (There are new spreading)
Na ang misis ni kuwan ay madaling makakuha (That the wife of blank is easy-to-get)
Bago maniwala mag-isip-isip ka muna (Before we believe, you think first)
Marami ang namatay sa maling akala (Many die because of wrong presumptions)

'Di mo na kailangang mag-alinlangan (You don't need to hesitate)
Kung tama ang gagawin mo (If you will do the right thingg)
Basta't huwag kalimutang magdahan-dahan (Just don't forget to slow down)
Kung 'di sigurado sa kalalabasan (If you are uncertain of the result)
kalalabasan ng binabalak mo (The result of your plan)

Chorus:
Maliit na butas lumalaki, konting gusot dumarami (A small hole grows/becomes bigger, a little fold multiplies)
Hindi mo maibabaon sa limot at bahala (You cannot bury it in forgetfulness and come-what-may)
Kapag nabulag ka-hah-ng maling akala (If you are blinded by wrong or false presumption)

Nasa'n na ba ako? (Where I am?)
Kaninong kama 'to? (Whose bed is this?)
Ilang ulit na bang nagigising sa ibang kwarto? (Many times I woke up in another's room)
Naglalayas sa bahay akala madali ang buhay (I ran away from home, thinking life is easy)
Ngayon ay nagsisi dahil 'di nakapagtapos (Now, I am regretful because I didn't finish school)

May mga kumakalat na balita (There are new spreading)
Na ang kaligtasa'y madaling makuha (That salvation is easy to get)
Bago maniwala mag-isip-isip ka muna (Before we believe, you think first)
Marami ang namatay sa maling akala (Many die because of wrong presumptions)

Walang Nagbago - Eraserheads

Change is permanent. I am a true believer of that Philosophy. I thought it was Parmenides who said "One cannot cross the same river twice" but searching it up on the "wiki" I knew I was wrong. I always confuse these Philosophers but what only matters to me is their view on change, that particular statement.

We are growing everyday, either physically, intellectually, emotionally, economically, name it. That's what I have always believed in. However, I came into a realiation while I was listening to this song going to sleep one night. Everyone changes, as if nothing have really changed. We laugh, we cry, we crave for food and all. It happened all the time, it happened before and it is still happening until now so what changed? Nothing is new, really.

Since I am a self-professed Philosopher, I am skeptic about the song. However, I am an avid Eheads fan (according to my standards) so I am caught in between. LOL! I am always caught in between you know. This is for the reason that there will always be two sides. I am going out of topic here.

I am just trying to share with you my thoughts about this song. Well, things change. That is the only permanent thing I know. I have changed a lot, my friends changed, my family have changed. My hair is now turning from black to gray, call it sign of aging! I'd say, there is already a change going on in this entry the mere translation of this song to English.

Most of the stories told in this blog were about the past --mostly from my past. I long wanted to go back there but I know I couldn't, noone could. This is a testament that life changes, things change, environment change, most especially the climate! Oh and look... Christmas is almost here. We have now greatly recovered from the great flood we experienced and we're somehow hopeful of a merrier Christmas celebration in the house!

Alright, I can't go back to my past but at least, I could stay near it by blogging about things, people and my favorite songs. I hope you would appreciate my own translation of the song "Walang Nagbago by Eraserheads". Please check below.

=============================
LYRICS OF THE SONG WALANG NAGBAGO by Eraserheads with Translation
Nung ikaw ay bata pa (When you were still a kid)
Ang lahat ay masaya (Everything is happy)
Umiikot ang mundo at hindi humihinto (The world is turning, not stopping)
Ang lahat ng makita mo ay bago (All you see is new)

At ngayon may edad ka na (And now you're aged)
At lunod sa problema (And drowning with problems)
Nangangarap na ibalik ang kahapon (You dream of going back to yesterday)
Hindi malaman kung bakit (You don't know why)
Kailangang magbago ang lahat (Everything needs to change)
Magbago ang lahat sa buhay mo (Everything needs to change)

Umaaraw, umuulan (It shines, it rains)
Noon pa ma'y sadyang ganyan (It has been like that ever since)
At kung ngayon lahat ng panaginip mo'y biglang naglaho (And if now your dreams suddenly changed)
Pare-pareho lamang tayo, isipin mong walang nagbago (The same happens to everyone, just think nothing has changed)

Kung ano tayo noon ay ganon pa rin ngayon (What we were before is the same right now)
Umiikot ang mundo at hindi humihinto (The world is turning, not stopping)
Ngunit ang kalagayan mo ay hindi nagbabago (But your status does not change)
Hindi nagbabago, ohh..Hindi nagbabago... (It doesn't change... ohh... doesn't change)
Walang nagbago, Walang nagbago... (Nothing has changed, nothing has changed)

Kama Supra - Eraserheads

I was just trying to relax until this song played on my PC and you know what I remembered? My mom's comment when she heard this specific song. She said: "What kind of music are you playing?"

Probably she got irritated because in the house, they always hear me play this music, my favorite Eraserheads collection, even when I was still in College. I knew back then that my mom judged the band through some of the lyrics they used like that part of the lyrics which says: "hihiga tayo at kakan---- tah!" There was a suspense at the end of the syllable which people might fill in the last syllable and would get a really un-wholesome kind of song.

Nevertheless, I still love this band and I admire the way they "twisted" words, phrases or sentences. Too bad they have to disband and too good, I still have their music to enjoy up until now.

There you are, just sharing with you my memory with this particular Eraserheads song. Below is my translation.

================================
Translation of the song Kama Supra by Eraserheads

Sampung buwan na akong hindi natutulog (It's been 10 months that I haven't slept)
Kasi naman ang ingay ng aming kapitbahay (Because my neighbors are too noisy)
Pag gabi disco house at videoke (During evening, disco house and videoke)
Kaya sorry na lang kung wala ako sa sarili (So I am sorry if I am out of myself)
Mahal kita pero miss na miss ko na... (I love you but I truly miss...)

Ang aking kama at ang malupit kong unan (My bed and my cruel pillow)
Ba't di ka na lang sumama (Why don't you come along)
Hihiga tayo at kakanta (We will lie down and sing)

Masarap matulog lalu-lalo na pag umuulan (It's nice to sleep especially when it is raining)
Huwag kang matakot sa pungay ng aking mga mata (Don't be afraid of my twinkling eyes)
Napuyat lang nang magyaya si Medwin kagabi sa kanila (I was just sleepless when Medwin invited me to their place)
Kami'y nagkantahan ng "muntik nang maabot ang langit" (We sang "almost reached heaven")
Kaya naman ako'y nasasabik sa (That is why I am so excited for...)

Ang aking kama at ang malupit kong unan (My bed and my cruel pillow)
Ba't di ka na lang sumama (Why don't you come along)
Hihiga tayo at kakanta (We will lie down and sing)

Overdrive - Eraseheads

I learned how to drive when I was about 14 years old. I was already on my second year in high school.

Among my siblings, my dad gave me driving lessons first. I practiced inside our compound, in the yard. It was just a plain "atras-abante" thing, meaning the lesson was just driving first gear, moving forward, then back-up. I don't want to give you the impressin that our compound was really big. It was just enough to move forward and backward, while I get accustomed with gear-shifting. If my memory serves me right, my first high way drive was from our school to our house.

It was an adventure, really, because I was forced by my brother to drive it, otherwise, we will not eat lunch. I remember that was the story. Since I mastered first gear, I wasn't sure when or how will I get to second gear. I used to recal my dad saying hear the engine. Once the engine grows a little noisy, I have to gear up. So I did... until we reached home. Thank God!

Almost 2 decades later, I thought of myself as over-driven. I now have fears driving, I am no longer confident driving. I now enjoy being the passenger. Anyway, if I really have to drive, I would but given the other option, I'd chose another.

This is my translation

Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka - Eraserheads

It is now the "wet season" here in the Philippines. Because of the changing environment and climate, we have already experienced rains as early as April this year, the month which used to be the "summer". There were rains during the dry season or summer and somehow, I enjoyed it.

On the other hand, I hate summer because I love the rainy season more. I like the wind, the sound of the rain, the cold nights and of course, I have someone to hug me. Rain has always been a picture of the heart for me. I specially loved this song because it says "Each time it rains and you are with me" the original lyrics said: "Tuwing umuulan at kapiling ka", the title of the song. I liked it even more when my favorite band - Eraserheads - recorded this song in their own version. There were flaws the way it was sung, I know but I just consider that as part of the band's interpretation of Ryan Cayabyab's music.

Have you tried hugging someone while it rained? I always remember the scenario of couples hugging or queitly listening to the rain. Although it's raining right now and I am alone, I have already established my attachment to rains... even if it is a storm, or the so called "hurricane". But a little rain will do.

I love it when it rains!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Here is my translation of the song:

Pagmasdan ang ulan (Observe/Notice the rain)
Untiunting pumapatak sa mga halama't mga bulaklak (Slowly pouring unto the plants and flowers)
Pagmasdan ang dilim (Observe/Notice the darkness)
Untiunting bumabalot sa buong paligid t'wing umuulan (Slowly wrapping the surroundings, everytime it rains)

Kasabay ng ulan bumubuhos ang 'yong ganda (As the rain pours, so is your beauty)
Kasabay rin ng hanging kumakanta (together with the wind singing)
Maari bang huwag ka na (Can you please not)
Sa piling ko'y lumisan pa hanggang ang hangi't ula'y tumila na (Leave my side til the wind and rain stops)

Buhos na ulan aking mundo'y lunuring tuluyan (Pour out rain, drown my world)
Tulad ng pagagos mo (Just like your flow)
'Di mapipigil ang puso kong nagliliyab (my heart won't stop from it flare/blaze or blazin)
Pagibig ko'y umaapaw (My love overflows)
Damdamin ko'y humihiyaw sa tuwa (My feeling shouts for joy)
Tuwing umuulan at kapiling ka (Each time it rains and you are with me)

Pagmasdan ang ulan (Notice the rain)
Unti-unting tumitila (as it slowly stops/leaves)
Ikaw ri'y magpapaalam na (You are also leaving)
Maari bang minsan pa mahagkan ka't maiduyan pa (Can I kiss and hug/cuddle you once more)
Sakbibi* ka't ulan lamang ang saksi (we are together and the rain is our only witness)

Minsan pa ulan bumuhos ka't h'wag nang tumigil pa (Once more, pour on rain and never stop)
Hatid mo ma'y bagyo dalangin ito ng puso kong sumasamo (You may bring storm but it's my hearts wish)
Pagibig ko'y umaapaw (My love is overflowing)
Damdamin ko'y humihiyaw sa tuwa (My feeling shouts in gladness)
Tuwing umuulan at kapiling ka (Everytime it rains and we are together)

Maari bang minsan pa mahagkan ka't maiduyan pa

Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka - EraserHeads

Huwag Mo Nang Itanong - Eraserheads

Day after day of blogging, it seems that the songs written in here are Tagalog, just like this one. I want to blog about my own song diaries in tagalog because I have lots of them. Sometimes, I just brush them off for a while because it's getting too difficult translating them.

Anyway, I will try to translate these songs for everyone's sake. I also love translating just to make other people appreciate our language as well as the thoughts of our local artists in writing their songs.

I am blogging about this song because it reminds me of my UP days, the University that taught me to appreciate my native language; and, the artist or the band whom I admire so much, even until now.

I would like to translate them first:
Hika ang inabot ko (I got asthma)
nang piliting hanggang kanto (when I tried to walk with you up to the corner)
ng isipan mong parang sweepstakes (when you realized it was like sweepstakes)
ang hirap manalo (its too difficult to win)

ngayon, pagdating ko sa bahay (Now when I arrive in the house)
ibaba ang iyong kilay (don't raise your eyebrows)
ayoko ng ingay (I don't like any noise)

huwag mo nang itanong sa akin (Do not ask me)
di ko rin naman sasabihin (I won't say anyway)
huwag mo nang itanong sa akin (Do not ask me)
at di ko na iisipin (And I won't think about it)

field trip sa may pagawaan ng lapis (field trip at the pencil factory)
ay katulad ng buhay natin (is like our life)
'sang mahabang pila mabagal at walang katuturan(one long line, slow, pointless)

ewan ko (I'm not sure)
hindi ko alam (I won't know)
pwede ba'ng 'wag na lang nating pag-usapan (Can we please not talk about it?)

huwag mo nang itanong sa akin ...

Huwag Mo Nang Itanong - Eraserheads

I hope you enjoyed the song. This reminds me of my "sister" Tin. She passed away few years ago. We joined this school organization in the University at the same time and since there are three of us in that batch, we became real buddies. We were made to sing this, because she also had a very nice singing voice. She used to be a choir member back in high school.

I always remember how she was forced to sing this song by our "superiors" (we call the leaders of the organization superiors equivalent to your masters in the fraternity) that night when we had our "finals", the night we are going to take our oath as a fully-pledged member of the organization.

That time was one of my acheivements in life that I won't forget, as often as I have instilled "Tin" in my head. I miss you girl! As the song goes, I won't ask anymore... although sometimes, I wish you would let me know. I remain sis!

Long live Anak-UP!!!

Kailan - Eraserheads

I would claim that my siblings are eraserheads fan because of me. I bought almost all of their albums, in casette tapes of course because those were affordable for student like me.

We were just having some good night with Matt's guitar. He was continuously strumming it, playing all eraserheads song he can remember while we guessed the title. This song, Kailan, was the most difficult one because he strummed it differently. When I thought I could guess all the eraserheads songs he was playing, he tricked me.

Ahh! I was never really good at music after all. I couldn't believe I didn't guess it. Bitter! Nevertheless, we sang the song and we were still happy together. Those were one of the moments I missed in our old house. We used to have a "bahay kubo" there where we spend most of our jamming sessions. That's history now because, at the moment, Matt is trying to re-make the bahay kubo in another location. I Can't wait!

Lyrics of the song Kailan by Eraserheads with translation (I tried hard to translate this song because Eraserheads lyrics are sometimes very sophisticated ;-)

Kailan mo ako hahagkan (When will you kiss me)
Matagal na akong naghihintay (I've been waiting for so long)
Nakadungaw sa bintana (Looking outside the window)
Mga dahon lang ang kumakaway (Only the leaves are waving)

Refrain:
Kailan ko madaramdaman (When will I feel)
Pagdampi ng iyong labi (nearness of your lips)
Tinatanong ko ang mga bituin (I'm asking the stars)
Mga luhang humahalik sa aking pisngi (Only tears kiss my cheek)
kailan ako tatahan

Higpit ng yahak ng dibdib (When will I be calm)
Nakatingin ako sa salamin (Looking at the mirror)
May guhit sa noo (lines on the forehead)
Mapait ang ngiti (bitter smiles)

Refrain
Kailan ko masisilayan (When will I see)
Sa araw-araw aking mahal (In everyday my love)
Mula paggising (from early waking hours)
Hanggang sa pag-idlip (til I fall asleep)
Kagandahan moy walang patid (your beauty never ceases)
Kailan mo ako hahagkan (WHen will you kiss me)
Matagal na akong naghihintay (I've been waiting for so long)
Nakadungaw sa bintana (Looking outside the window)
Mga dahon lang ang kumakaway (Only the leaves are waving)

Kailan ako lalaya (When will I be freed)
Sa anino ng pag-iisa (from the shadow of darkness)
Mga rehas lang ang tanaw (I can only see metal bars)
Nanginginig sa seldang maginaw (I'm freezing inside this cold jail cell)

Poorman's Grave - Eraserheads

This is a song of my favorite local band, the Eraserheads. I have always been a fan.

The other night I heard my brother-in-law playing the guitar to the tune of this song. It was the first time I heard him play a guitar, albeit short. At least I found out somebody is better than me in playing the guitar (they all do, in fact, because I am still learning to play the guitar.) When I heard him play this, I remembered the song. I think he just likes to play the chords of it then I remembered the lyrics of the song.

The message of the song is turning your back to poverty. That was where we were during our childhood. By the way, my bayaw's family and our family grew up in the same community in La Union so we know the capabilities of the people there in terms of spending. We had a few to spend because life was difficult back then.

Well, I truly salute my bayaw because he really takes care of my nieces and nephew (his kids with my sister). He is hardworking probably because he doesn't want his kids to experience what we've been through when we were younger. I am glad I know my sister and kids are in good hands. I'd just like to dwell on that thought for a while and try to forget that other difficult things happening around us. So let's focus on the song now, shall we?

Here is the lyrics:

POORMAN'S GRAVE
I know a man who had nothing
He was a poor man all his life
He lived in a shack by the roadside
With starving kids and a loving wife

He went to church every Sunday
He prays from morning until night
He said Good Lord, why have you forsaken me
When everything I did I thought was right

Now my Life is coming to an end
There's only one thing I'm wishing for
All my days I have never sinned
So I hope you wont ignore what I'm asking for...

Oh honey when I die dress me up in a coat and tie
Give my feet a pair of shoes that I haven't wore in a long time
Put me in a golden box not a cross on a pile of rocks
Bury me where the grass is green and the gates are shining...

Oh honey when I die give me a bed of roses where I could lie
I'm gonna use up all the money that I saved
'Coz I dont wanna lie in a poor man's grave...

I know a man who had nothing
He dreamed of satin sheets all his life
He lived and worked like a dog
Licking every boot he sees just to survive

He comes home drunk every night
Wakes up the kids and talks to his wife, he said
Honey you have been so good to me
I only wish we had a better life

And now my lifes coming to an end
There's only one thing I'm wishing for
All my days I have lived in shame
So I hope you wont ignore
Just what I'm asking for...
