Millennium - Robbie Williams

If you are a Philosophy major back in college, you might have read that book by Jostein Gaarder, "Sophie's World". This song reminds me of that novel. Believe it or not, it is a novel despite the philosophical terminologies posited therein.

For me, this book serves as the bible of Philosophy majors due to the fact that majority of philosophical tenets were discussed there, including an indepth definition of terminologies. The start of this song says, "Some say that we are players, some say that we are pawn." It means sometimes, we create our own fate, our destiny. Sometimes it is undeniable that our fate is authored by somebody else, especially when things come up not in consonance with what we expect them to be. It is like our lives have been written to be as they are, then we are mere pawns. We surrender to the wisdom of some divine powers around us, thus we are pawns.

Pawn is a chess piece, right? If you play chess, you would know what that means. And this song likewise reminds me of that "millennium bug" where everyone got so frightened as to the digitized effect of the year 2000 unto the financial/banking matters around the world. all right, now time to appreciate this song from Robbie Williams.

Sophie's World is also a story where the main character, Sophie, and her mentor Albert (I think was his name) were caught in the end realizing that they are just a part of a big picture. It's like they were being toyed of. It's like Plato's philosophy claiming that this is the world of matter and still, there is another world of form.  In the latter, there is peace, beauty, simplicity and paradise.  If you got time, try to grab a copy of that book. For now, enjoy the lyrics.
Lyrics of the song Millennium
by Robbie Williams
Some say that we are players
some say that we are pawns
but we've been making money
since the day that we were born

Got to slow down, cause we'll low down.
Round and round in circles live a life of solitude
'till we find ourselves a partner someone to relate to
Then we slow down, before we fall down.
We've got stars directing our fate
and we're praying it's not too late
'cause we know we're falling from grace
Millennium

Live for liposuction detax for your 'rents
overdose for Christmas and give it up for Lent
My friends are all so cynical refuse to keep the faith
We all enjoy the madness 'cause we know we're gonna fade away.

We've got stars directing our fate and we're praying it's not too late 'cause we know we're falling from grace Millennium Come and have a go if you think you are hard enough Come and have a go if you think you are hard enough Millennium Millennium

We've got stars directing our fate and we're praying it's not too late 'cause we know we're falling from grace Millennium (Sometimes you know) And when we come we always come too late

I often think that we were born to hate get up and see the sarcasm in my eyes.
And when we come we always come too late I often think that we were born to hate get up
and see the sarcasm in my eyes.

We've got stars directing our fate (Millennium)
and we're praying it's not too late(Millennium)
'cause we know we're falling from grace(Millennium)
 (And we won't stop)
We've got stars directing our fate and we're praying it's not too late
'cause we know we're falling from grace Millennium (fades)
