Push It - Salt n Pepa

My friend wrote to me the other day telling me how worried he was when he heard about the flood that happened here in the Philippines. We used to work together, you know. This was one of the songs he sent me via email while I was "trying to push" the agents get more job done during our shift. We worked together in a call center business. He represented our client and we regularly talked on the phone.

I had to leave work and pursue my law school. We parted ways but remained to be friends. All I have is this song to remind me of him and of course, my iPod which I got from him. He emailed me the other day saying that although he seldom write to me, he will always be a friend. That was really sweet. He is truly sweet, you know.

I was out of my head when one time I ringed him, I didn't realize that we belong to different time zones, so ended waking him up at 4 in the morning. I hugely apologized for that mistake. It was so embarrassing! Imagine waking somebody up very early in the morning just to say "hi" and a few chit-chat maybe. That is one difficulty of having a friend from a different time zone.

Lyrics of the song Push It I copied from youtube

Ah, push it
Ah, push it

Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby

Get up on this!

Ow! Baby!
Salt and Pepa's here!

[Now wait a minute, y'all
This dance ain't for everybody
Only the sexy people
So all you fly mothers, get on out there and dance
Dance, I said!]

Salt and Pepa's here, and we're in effect
Want you to push it, babe
Coolin' by day then at night working up a sweat
C'mon girls, let's go show the guys that we know
How to become number one in a hot party show
Now push it

Ah, push it - push it good
Ah, push it - push it real good
Ah, push it - push it good
Ah, push it - p-push it real good

Hey! Ow!
Push it good!

Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby

Yo, yo, yo, yo, baby-pop
Yeah, you come here, gimme a kiss
Better make it fast or else I'm gonna get pissed
Can't you hear the music's pumpin' hard like I wish you would?
Now push it

Push it good
P-push it real good

Ah, push it
Get up on this!

Boy, you really got me going
You got me so I don't know what I'm doing

Ah, push it

Will You Still Love Me - Chicago

I was trying to find the music from imeem but to no avail. I just hope you know or still remember this song despite its absence in the airwaves lately. I do have a CD although I haven't synched it yet with my ipod, which I regularly use. I was trying to get a song from my past and this popped up.

This was a song contest piece of my brother's peers when we were still kids. Every summer break, which is from April to May, we spend our vacation with our very generous aunt in Manila. They lovingly accommodated us, most especially my eldest brother whom they have vocally acknowledged to be their favorite. Ooops, I'm done with bitterness okay? Of course his sibling envied him especially that all attention are in him. We had a lot of fun as kids too. It was my first "immersion" with Manila kids (as compared to kids from the province, that is from prim and proper to an urchin. Ahh, I just don't know what is the appropriate word for that.)

In the province, we were raised to wake up early in the morning. You should get off the body before the sun shows its rays; we eat breakfast together and we seldom have hotdog on the breakfast table. We had omelet, most of the time. Those kinds of breakfast table that I seldom eat now nor the kids of the new generation wouldn't appreciate. Then again, we eat dinner at around 5PM then we stayed inside the house before the bats start to hover above us. We don't live in caves, alright? I just remember seeing bats, few of them, I now wondered where they were heading.

In Manila, however, hotdog is a breakfast must! Kids tend to rise up any time they want, even when sun rays are all over their face. They manage to bear the heat of the sun in their face, plus the thought that they remain asleep despite the brightness of the sun. Likewise, kids eat anytime, regardless of who they eat with or they eat alone. That same scenario also happens in any meals of the day. And here's what really got me: kids in Manila get to enjoy the games in the evening when all the street lights are on minus the vehicles traversing the populate streets or "eskinitas" of Manila. It was an experience of a lifetime: to be able to play in the evening!

One particular evening that my brother's peers were all out was that one fiesta moment. I think it was a celebration on the feast of St. Thomas happening every May. There was a singing contest and one contestant is Maricel. I still don't know how to appreciate music then. I was just amazed with the idea that a friend of my brother would join a contest, which would I unlikely do. I don't even know a single dance step before.

Perhaps, I was just raised conservatively or I was just to afraid to explore, like a chick who's always beneath hear parent's wings. This was an eye-opener to me and since I am, as I always was, a slow learner, I started spreading my wings, the way Manila kids do. Was I proud? Do I really have to rejoice that I somehow adapted their culture? Why not? I am now a blend of city/province girl, to complain is of no moment.

As a final word: regardless of our upbringing, we are one.

Will You Still Love Me lyrics

Take me as I am
Put your hand in mine now and forever
Darling here I stand, stand before you now
Deep inside I always knew
It was you, you and me
Two hearts drawn together bound by destiny
It was you and you for me
Every road leads to your door
Every step I take for evermore
Just say you love me for the rest of your life
I gotta lot of love and I don't want to let go
Will you still love me for the rest of my life?
'Cause I can't go on
No, I can't go on
I can't go on
If I'm on my own
Take me as I am
Put your heart in mine, stay with me forever
'Cause I am just a man who never understood
I never had a thing to prove
'Till there was you
You and me
Then it all came clear so suddenly
How close to you that I wanna be
Just say you love me for the rest of your life
I gotta lot of love and I don't wan to let go
Will you still love me for the rest of my life?
'Cause I can't go on
No, I can't go on
I can't go on
If I'm on my own
Do you believe a love could run so strong?
Do you believe a love could pass you by?
There was no special one for me
I was the lonely one, you see
But then my heart lost all control
Now you're all that I know
Just say you love me for the rest of your life
I gotta lot of love and I don't wan to let go
Will you still love me for the rest of my life?
'Cause I can't go on
No, I can't go on
I can't go on
If I'm on my own
I can't go on
No, I can't go on
'Cause I can't go on (Will you still love me?)
No, I can't go on (Just say you love me)
I can't go on
Without somebody I can call my own
'Cause I can't go on (Will you still love me?)
No, I can't go on (Just say you love me)
Just stay around
'Cause I can't go on (Will you still love me?)
No, I can't go on (Just say you love me)
I can't go on
If you could say your love
'Cause I can't go on (Will you still love me?)
No, I can't go on (Just say you love me)
Stay around, you'll never be alone

Don't Fall In Love with a Dreamer - Kenny Rogers

I was born a "Piscean" (Pisces)although I am not really the type who is so particular about horoscopes. I just thought it's blog-worthy because it also reminds me of a dear friend, a close one. She is likewise a "piscean" and when we had a program at school which required us to use a codename, I recommended she use this one because from my reading of a mug given to me, it said that a person born under the zodiac sign of Pisces is a dreamer.

I also told her about this song, sung by one of my favorite singers. Sol (her name) and I shared a lot in common. We took Philosophy and Political Science as our major courses back in UP. We went home to the same dorm and there was one time we shared the same boarding house. We joined the same campus organization and helped put up one (an organization called POLIS). Incidentally, together we also doubted our faith, our religion and our God (that was before). We always go out together sometimes people would interchange our faces, our teachers confuse our names.

At present, we conitnued our passion for the laws and religion. In the near future, we hope to be called Lawyers.

So this song in particular, although when I hear a Kenny Rogers song, somehow I remember Sol. Here goes the lyrics:

Just look at you sitting there
You never looked better than tonight
And it'd be so easy to tell you I'd stay
Like I've done so many times
I was so sure this would be the night
You'd close the door
And wanna stay with me
And it'd be so easy
To tell you I'd stay
Like I've done so many times

Don't fall in love with a dreamer
Because he'll always take you in
Just when you think
You've really changed him
He'll leave you again
Don't fall in love with a dreamer
Because he'll break you every time

So put out the light and just hold on
Before we say goodbye
Now it's morning
and the phone rings and ya say
You gotta get your things together
You just gotta leave
Before you change your mind
And if you knew
What I was thinking girl, I'd turn around
If you'd just ask me one more time
Don't fall in love with a dreamer
Because he'll always take you in
Just when you think
You've really changed him
He'll leave you again
Don't fall in love with a dreamer
Because he'll break you every time
so put out the light and just hold on
Before we say goodbye

Dont fall in love with a dreaMER - Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes

Tin Man - America

This is an old song, a hit in the 70s perhaps but it sure reminds me of Gelo, my 10-year old friend, neighbor from Tandang Sora (Quezon City, Philippines). He is the young boy who loved the song by America, which is relatively an "institution" when it comes to music because they have been around for some decades already.

I am not sure if Gelo really understands the lyrics of it or what's in the song that draws him near it. I would say maybe because her mom loves this band and he is what we call a "mama's boy". However, in that particular album by America, this is the only song that he keeps on playing on the cd player.

I, for one, got interested with this song because it caught the attention of a young kid. I have heard of this song long ago, and keeps hearing it played over the radio for quite sometime, but to him, this is like a magnet to his ears.

Oh boy, I miss this kid. I haven't really seen him for over a year now. I hope he still remembers me.

Here's the lyrics:
Sometimes late when things are real
And people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait
And catch the perfect prize that waits among the shelves

But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad.

So please believe in me
When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round
Smoke glass stain bright color
Image going down, down, down, down
Soapsuds green like bubbles

Oh, Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad

So please believe in me
When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round
Smoke glass stain bright color
Image going down, down, down, down
Soapsuds green like bubbles

No, Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad

So please believe in me

Lost in Space - Lighthouse Family

This is a song from the late 1990s which I clearly remember because of my friends whom I joined in their adventure while working on their thesis (a requirement before they could gradute from college). I was there to help them get to the beach and took their photos. hahaha! I was a very proud photographer!

I remember it was about "flora and fauna". They were all Biology students, while I was a Social Science gradute so I really didn't care what the heck were they looking for at the mangrove areas. All I care about was to bring them there, provide them a decent place to stay, take their pictures and sing to them this song... which apparently kept on playing on their heads even when the radio is off. Nice!

We explored the mangrove area of San Fabian beach, which is 10-minute drive from our house. We stayed the whole day there and it was so fun soaking our feet on the water! They tried to finish their task while enjoying the rest of the adventure.

That was more than 10 years ago and fortunately, we still keep in touch. Some of them are now professionals in their own field and we now have doctor friends!

So, in remembrance to that day, my friends, I know you would still remember this song! This is our song!

Sometimes I get tired of this me first attitude
You are the one thing that keeps me smiling
That's why I'm always wishing hard for you

'Cause your life shines so bright
I don't feel no solitude
You are my first star at night
I'd be lost in space without you

And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven if I do

Feels just so fine
When we touch the sky me and you
This is my idea of heaven
Why can't it always be so good

But it's alright, I know you're out there
Doing what you've gotta do
You are my soul satellite
I'd be lost in space without you

And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven, if I do

And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven, if I do

And I'll never lose my faith in you
And I'll never lose my faith in you

Hands to Heaven - Christian Bautista

This is a song revived by a local artist Christian Bautista. He was one of the finalists in a talent search here in the Philippines. I watched that talent search because my friend Mona told me so. He was particularly cute, by the way. She said this singer looked a lot like his boyfriend. (Owwwsss???)

Anyway, when I first heard this song, I was in the government office (my first job in Manila, my first and only civil service job). My friend Beth said it was beautifully sang by this good-looking singer. I told her I liked the lyrics, it was so full of passion and love, and instantly we shared the same sentiment regarding the song.

Beth is a very good friend. I heard from my aunt that Beth and I are somewhat related but I presume that would be beyond fourth degree of consanguinity and/or affinity. We have good taste when it comes to songs so I bet we really are related to each other. Nevertheless, our friendship remains strong up to this year and our communication is much open.

By the way, we were born the same month. She loves to make jokes, I love listening to her jokes. She's really a funny gal in her natural way.

Hands To Heaven - Christian Bautista

As I watch you move across the moonlit room
There`s so much tenderness in your loving
Tomorrow I must leave the dawn knows no reprieve
God give me strength when I am leaving

So raise your hands to heaven & pray
That we`ll be back together someday

Tonight, I need your sweet caress
Hold me in the darkness
Tonight you calm my restlessness
You relieve my sadness

As we move to embrace, tears run down your face
I whisper words of love so softly
I can`t believe this pain, it`s driving me insane
W/o your touch, life will be lonely

So raise your hands to heaven & pray
That we`ll be back together someday

Morning has come another day
I must pack my bags & say goodbye... goodbye

One of us - Joan Osborne

There was a time in my life when I was at a loss. I was raised as a Catholic and was religiously following orders of my religion. One point in my life, when I was studying Philosophy at the University of the Philippines, I lost that faith.

I would consider it the most awakening moment in my life and this song would always remind me of my slumber from darkness. What if God doesn't exist, I asked myself. What were the events that led to the existence of God? How did God come into being? Is he a being at all? Where does He reside? and a lot more questions confronting me and so I stopped believing. I got tired looking for answers, I got lazy explaining, I got uninterested learning about God. In fact, I lost interest in the Supreme Being and all other transcendental things. I just stopped believing and told myself there was now heaven or spirit and everything not tangible. I became a skeptic, agnostic.

But I had a friend who knows about my struggle and didn't quit on me. She keeps on telling me she's praying for me. Then the unthinkable happened. I began establishing the existence of God. I got tired finding for answers then started believing again. There are a lot of things I cannot explain in this world, I told myself. Not really finding out the answers for all my previous questions is not blind obedience. I believe it is called "leap of faith". I know my friends prayers helped me a lot and of course, my willingness to believe, to chose what my parents have been telling me all along. There are things we cannot resolve on our own so hte layman's term for that is "go with the flow". If I became a fool folowing Jesus Christ, at least I know someone else is more fool than I am. There are those who have died defending their Religion. I haven't reach that point yet but when I do, I am gladly surrendering my life. (Whew... that was tough explanation and this is such a heavy blog from me this time.)

All right, so let's cut the chase, here is the song:

If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?

And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?

If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see if, seeing meant
That you would have to believe in things like heaven
And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?

Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Just tryin' to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

One Of Us - Joan Osborne

You - The Carpenters

This song is one of the many Carpenter songs that I learned from my sister. It was always her who criticized my singing and taught me a lot of songs, really! (Sometimes, she learns from me too, she just can't accept it ;-)

I remember singing this a few times before the tone and rhythm of it finally hit me! I wasn't a slow learner, I guess music is such an art where you can't really do it the abstract way at all times. I think despite of it not counted as an exact science (not even science), there has to be organization to it. Well, maybe I am just saying this because I really had difficulty with this song before. But I can sing it more confidently now.

I also remember my dear friend Mona whom I commissioned to write something about this song. She just said that if there's one song that would remind her of me, it would be this song. She probably heard my sister and I sang this before and it played to her brain over and over... that's my story which is I hope her story as well. If there are reactions, please do so my dear... go to the comment box.

'Til next post!

Lyrics of the song YOU
You are the one who makes me happy
When everything else turns to gray
Yours is the voice that wakes me mornings
And sends me out into the day

You are the crowd that sits quiet list'ning to me
With all the mad sense I make
You are one of the few things worth remembering
And since it's all true, how can anyone mean more to me than you.

Sorry if sometimes I look past you
There's no one beyond your eyes
Inside my head the wheels are turning
Hey sometimes I'm not so wise

You are my heart and my soul, my inspiration
Just like the old love song goes
You are one of the few things worth remembering
And since it's all true, how could anyone mean more to me than you

You are my heart and my soul, my inspiration
Just like the old love song goes
You are one of the few things worth remembering...
And since it's all true, how could anyone mean more to me than you.

Dancing Queen - Abba

This would be the most favorite Abba song for me, my mom and my sister - all the ladies in my family. We love this song primarily because the beat is fast and the tone so high... it's like vein-breaking note is placed all over the song.

I remember we were in my cousin's house (in Tandang Sora, which is in Quezon City). We had this mic which has installed videoke songs on it. It was my mom's favorite gadget. So we were singing with our neighbors and my mom, as friendly as she is, easily got the attention of our equally friendly neighbors while singing this song. It was also a mom-and-daughter-tandem - we shared the song. But all the praises were for my mom (I was second best, I know). When that party was over, the neighbors couldn't forget that note when my mom sung "Diggin' the dancing queen", with full force, with the right pause and perfect note!

That was just one of my stories with this song and my mom! Bravo to my mom!

Here goes the lyrics!

You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king

Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat
From the tambourine, oh yeah

You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave 'em burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat
From the tambourine, oh yeah

You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen
Dig in the dancing queen

Through The Years - Kenny Rogers

This article is about me and my best friend and this is our song!

(N.B. These are just a few recollection of the good and bad events that challenged our friendship and our being.)

We have different ways of categorizing our best friends, why we chose them and what circumstances that brought us together. Ours was a product of some series of painful events. I'd like to reiterate that I am not normally an emotional person, but this is the "softest" spot of my life -those series of tragic events we, me and my cousin, shared together.

In high school, I had nothing to be proud of and I was always shying away because I knew back then that I am not one of those normal high school girls. (Stop there.) I was always misunderstood then I found this person -whom I can be just me when I'm with her. She's the daughter of my father's cousin (in legal terms: consanguinity on the fourth degree:)

Both our families lived in one shelter when they needed cover from the ash falls of a volcano that erupted. This was the event in 1991 when the Mount Pinatubo in Central Luzon (Philippines) erupted, thus changed the lives of the people there, and it also changed mine. It was during their stay in our house that their elder sister died caused by H-fever or dengue. I was not really sure. All I know is that we were all too young to be faced with such tragic event so we had to pull strength from each other. In less than a month, at our early age, we've experienced one of life's most painful part -losing a loved one!

Then there we were, stuck together: a person who has lost self-esteem and no-sense of self-worth; she (and her family) lost a house, stopped school and lost a sister.

These and all other depressions, life's pressures, peer and family-related problems and the likes that we shared. But my best friend and I, we survived. We always helped each other. I was the practical side, she was the spiritual side. We had a very good chemistry. I could say, I was the head, she was the heart. But of course, like all other friendship stories out there, we argued a lot and argued some more until our communication grew lesser and the distance between us was more than 100 miles. We had a fight because of conflicting outlook in life. We realized we had different lives and we thought nothing seemed to click between us anymore. But I remember, before we actullay parted ways, we still sang this song not knowing it might be our last duet together.

But after all those years, we were able to work things out. We knew something in this song drew us again to each other. Now we are over-my-dead-body-ready-to-protect each other just like we used to. And despite our extreme ideals, we are still ready to support each other because that's what friendship is all about. That's what the previous pains of life had taught us at our tender years. "Through all the good and bad... we'd always work things out". That's why we always believed in this song.

Lyrics | Through The Years lyrics

Despite the pains we've caused to each other, we still love each other. In our lives, we will always have issues, concerns, problems but I will always be proud to say that I am ready to face them all because we got each other.
